Exam monitoring notice

Some test owners turn on supervision to keep a test fair. This page explains what it does and what happens to the data. The test page tells you before you start if supervision is on.

Last updated: 8 October 2026

1. When it applies

Only when the owner of a test switches supervision on. If it is on, you see it on the test page before you start. Tests without supervision do none of the things below.

2. What can be monitored

  • Tab and window: when you leave the test tab, the window loses focus or you exit full screen, and for how long. The owner can also block copy, paste and right-click.
  • Camera, if the owner requires it: every few seconds your browser checks that the camera is on and not covered, and, where your browser supports it, whether your face is in view and whether there is more than one face. This checking happens in your browser; the video is not sent anywhere.
  • Screen sharing, if the owner requires it: you share your screen so a picture of it can be taken when something is flagged.
  • Answers: after the test, the owner can see which pairs of people gave unusually similar wrong answers.

We do not record audio or video. We do not read your files or other windows.

3. Pictures

When something is flagged, the page saves one small still picture (of your screen if you share it, otherwise of the camera) with the time and the reason. At most six small pictures are kept per attempt. They are stored with that attempt. Nothing is recorded continuously.

4. Your permission

Your browser asks before the camera or screen is used and you can say no. The owner may then decide that you cannot take the test, since they set the rules. Tell the owner if you have a good reason, such as a disability or no camera.

5. Who sees it

Only the owner of the test and the editors they invited. Other participants never see your warnings or pictures. Pictures are loaded only when the owner opens them for a specific attempt.

6. How long it is kept

Warnings and pictures stay with the attempt for as long as the test owner keeps the test or its results. When your account is erased, the pictures taken during your attempts are deleted. You can also ask the test owner or us at the contact details on our Contact page to delete them earlier.

7. Flags are not verdicts

A warning can have an innocent reason, such as a notification, a bad connection or a camera glitch. AshQuiz shows signals and a risk level to help the owner look, but does not punish anyone itself. The owner decides, and should give you a chance to explain.

8. Questions or concerns

Talk to the test owner first, because they chose to supervise. For questions about how AshQuiz handles the data, write to the contact details on our Contact page.
